Türkiye’s first domestic sugar beet seed registered!

Two types of domestic and national sugar beet seeds produced within the scope of the project carried out in cooperation with Türkşeker, Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University and Kastamonu University were registered. Domestic beet seeds, the production of which has started, will meet with farmers next year.

In recent years, efforts to develop domestic sugar beet varieties, which started about 30 years ago at the Sugar Institute affiliated to the Turkish Sugar Factories A.Ş. (Türkşeker), have accelerated in recent years.

In this context, Türkşeker and Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University faculty members Professor Dr. Songül Gürel and Professor Dr. Ekrem Gürel and Kastamonu University faculty member Professor Dr. Mehmet Cengiz Baloğlu signed a protocol titled “Breeding and Seed Production of Domestic and National Sugar Beet Varieties Resistant to Diseases and Pests”.

Türkşeker 2023 and Türkşeker 2053 were registered!

As a result of the steps taken to develop domestic sugar beet varieties resistant to diseases and pests, which will have the highest level of quality and yield by using molecular biological methods, sugar beet varieties named “Türkşeker 2023” and “Türkşeker 2053”, for which production permits were obtained in January 2022, were registered on 4 April 2024. Thus, both varieties were registered in the National Variety List.

The registered domestic sugar beet varieties, seed production of which started in 2024, are planned to be introduced to farmers in 2025 and the following years.

Domestic sugar beet seed production is planned to be carried out in approximately 7 years in all of Türkiye…
