Sesame, which adds flavour to a wide range of food products from bagels to chicken dishes, salads to breads, tahini to pastries, cookies to Ramadan pita bread, stands out as an important export item for Türkiye.
While Türkiye exported 19.6 million dollars of sesame in the January-February period of 2024, 6.6 million dollars of this export was realised by Aegean exporters.
Cumin and anise accompanied the hike in sesame exports…
Pointing out that in January-February 2024, the hike in sesame exports was accompanied by cumin and anise exports, Muhammet Öztürk, Head of the Aegean Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Exporters’ Association, said, “Türkiye’s cumin exports soared by 106 per cent from 1 million 89 thousand dollars to 2 million 242 thousand dollars and aniseed exports increased by 111 per cent from 357 thousand dollars to 754 thousand dollars. Total exports of sesame, cumin and aniseed trio increased by 180 per cent from 8 million 92 thousand dollars to 22 million 629 thousand dollars.”
Poland, Iraq and Germany stood out in sesame exports…
“While Poland was the leader in sesame exports from Türkiye in 2023 with 9 million 164 thousand dollars, we exported 7.7 million dollars of sesame to Iraq. While Germany demanded 3.2 million dollars of sesame from Türkiye, we exported 2.6 million dollars of sesame to Greece, 2.5 million dollars to Romania, 2.4 million dollars to Israel, 2.3 million dollars to Japan,” Öztürk added…
