EKREM ORAN: ÇEŞME WILL TAKE ITS PLACE IN THE WORLD’S MASTIC PRODUCTION

The third harvest ceremony was held for gum (mastic) trees as part of the ‘Gum Dripping from Çeşme’ project. Stating that they increased the number of gum trees in the region to 2,000 in a short time, İzmir’s Çeşme District Mayor M. Ekrem Oran said, “We have 10 times the potential of Chios, we will take our place in the world’s gum production.”

Harvest preparation ceremony of mastic trees was held for the third time this year, within the scope of the ‘Gum Dripping from Çeşme’ project, which was prepared to boost the production of mastic in the Çeşme district of İzmir.

The ceremony was attended by Çeşme Mayor M. Ekrem Oran, as well as vice-mayors, city council members, local producers and many citizens. Mayor Oran, in his speech here, said, “Gum mastic is of great importance not only in terms of human health, but also in terms of economic input of our country. In this context, our efforts to protect and reproduce mastic trees and increase productivity with necessary vaccinations are also very important for us. Gum is a product of high strategic value for us. It grows in an area of ​​only 150 square kilometers in Chios island and 250 square kilometers in Çeşme Peninsula. We have 10 times the potential of Chios.”

“Yet allocations must be implemented as soon as possible for the dissemination of chewing gum. To date, we have grown 12 thousand gum saplings. This year, we produced 50 kg of mastic gum and 4 liters of gum oil, together with the private sector, we joined the pharmacology departments of 2 different universities with TUBITAK (Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Institute) with Çeşme gum,” he added…
