OMU developed an alfalfa variety that can grow in every region of Türkiye…

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Bafra Vocational School Department of Crop and Animal Production Faculty Member Professor Dr. Sebahattin Albayrak said that as a result of 13 years of work, they developed and registered the alfalfa variety ‘Albatur’ which can grow in every region of Türkiye.

Albayrak stated that alfalfa, which is among the plants grown as animal feed in the world and in the country due to its high nutritional and protein value, is called “the queen of forage plants”.

In this context, Albayrak explained that they developed the alfalfa variety called ‘Albatur’ within the scope of the study they started as OMU in 2010 and explained, “We collected our Albatur alfalfa variety by cloning from 60 different points in 22 districts of Isparta, Burdur and Afyonkarahisar provinces. In addition to various breeding methods, we tried to develop our variety with synthetic variety breeding (population obtained by mixing a large number of seeds) and present it to Turkish agriculture and farmers.”
