Nurettin Tarakçıoğlu, Vice President of the Aegean Furniture, Paper and Forestry Products Exporters’ Association, said that Türkiye’s non-wood forest products exports amounted to 181 million dollars in 2024.

“While oregano accounted for 48 percent of total spice exports, 32 percent was from laurel. We carry out 70 percent of Türkiye-wide spice exports from the Aegean Region. In 2025, we aim to export 200 million dollars. The non-wood forest products sector should be given much more importance and should be handled with a strategic perspective,” he said.
Pointing out that non-wood forest products cover a wide range from laurel to oregano, linden to chestnut, mushroom to resin, Tarakçıoğlu continued as follows: ‘The Aegean Region is one of the most important centres of the country in terms of both production and export. We are among the world’s leading suppliers of aromatic and medicinal plants such as laurel, oregano and sage. This success is based not only on our natural wealth, but also on the devoted work of our producers, exporters and institutions.”
“We believe that in order to make this success sustainable and to carry it further, we need to solve some basic problems together: Protection of natural resources and dissemination of sustainable collection methods, Establishment of traceability systems from production to export, Prevention of unregistered trade, Encouragement of value-added product production, Increasing compliance with international quality and certification standards. The solution of the problems is only possible with a coordinated public-private sector co-operation, scientific methods and the principle of sustainability,” he added…
