Savaş Akcan: Five-year trade volume in ‘rose’, the symbol of Valentine’s day, reached 18 million dollars

Türkiye’s trade volume in roses, the most preferred flower of Valentine’s Day, has reached 18 million dollars in the last 5 years.

In the last 5 years, a total of 523 million 26 thousand 808 cut roses were produced on 270 hectares of land in Türkiye.

2020: 93 million 274 thousand units
2021: 101 million 204 thousand units
2022: 99 million 417 thousand units
2023: 105 million 771 thousand units
2024: 123 million 359 thousand units
In 2024, cut rose production soared by 16.6% compared to the previous year to 123 million 359 thousand.

MOST ROSE EXPORTS TO IRAQ…

In the last 5 years, a total of 2 million 921 thousand dollars of exports were realised in cut roses.
In 2023, exports decreased by 28.7% to 441 thousand 741 dollars.
The most exports were made to Iraq (148 thousand 732 dollars).
Turkmenistan ranked second with exports worth 127 thousand 424 dollars.

IMPORTS SURGE IN ROSE…

In the last 5 years, 15 million 42 thousand dollars of imports were made.
In 2024, imports reached 4 million 384 thousand dollars.
The Netherlands ranked first with imports of 3 million 491 thousand dollars.
Kenya became the second largest exporter country with 415 thousand 454 dollars.
As a result, a total foreign trade volume of 17 million 967 thousand dollars has occurred in the last 5 years in cut roses.

ORCHID REPLACING THE ROSE?

Savaş Akcan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ornamental Plants Growers Union (SÜSBİR), made the following evaluations on the cut flower market:

Demand for roses increased in the domestic market, imports increased, but exports decreased.
Instead of expensive flowers such as orchids, more affordable roses are preferred.
Orchid production and imports remained stable, while exports increased.
Akcan stated that as orchid prices reached 1500 TL, consumers prefer to buy a single rose for 350 TL.

In the rose, which is the symbol of Valentine’s Day, the hike in demand in the domestic market soared imports, while exports decreased…
