According to a study by Fortune Business Insights, the global cheese market, valued at 208.66 billion dollars in 2026, is forecast to reach 328.71 billion dollars by 2034. Europe is the largest region in the global cheese market, with a 48.43 percent market share in 2025.

Market growth is being driven by various trends, including the increasing use of cheese in traditional and artisanal cheeses, plant-based alternatives, snacks and fast-moving consumer goods. In the US, the growing use of cheese in fast-food items such as pizza and sandwiches, as well as its increasing popularity in various ethnic cuisines such as Italian and Mexican, is also contributing to market growth.

Natural and artisanal cheeses gain prominence…

Consumers’ growing interest in fresh, homemade and premium-quality products is paving the way for artisanal cheese producers who use natural processing techniques. Natural cheeses such as Cheddar and Parmesan, meanwhile, are in high demand thanks to their longer shelf lives, flavour profiles and versatility in cooking. Produced with natural ingredients and containing fewer preservatives, these cheeses are also a top choice amongst health-conscious consumers.

The rise of plant-based products and alternatives to dairy continues. The growing popularity of veganism, particularly in the US, Germany and the UK, alongside consumer awareness of health concerns and the environmental impact of livestock farming, is driving this trend.

Mozzarella, meanwhile, stands out as the cheese with the highest market share globally. Its widespread use in dishes such as pasta, pizza, enchiladas and risotto underpins demand for mozzarella, whilst growing interest in Western-style cuisine across the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East is expected to further boost consumption of mozzarella and cheddar.

Consumer preferences vary by region…

In North America, changing snacking and dessert habits – particularly amongst the millennial generation – are driving up demand for cheese-topped pizzas and sandwiches. In Europe, consumers are turning to organic and non-genetically modified (GMO-free) products that support physical health and well-being.

In the Asia-Pacific region, natural ingredients and health claims are taking centre stage, whilst in the Middle East and Africa, cheese remains an important part of the daily diet. Growing interest in healthy snacks amongst young consumers in the region is also supporting demand for cheese-based products…
