Salih Çelik: We aim to become a self-sufficient country in red meat

THE GOAL OF A SELF-SUFFICIENT COUNTRY…

Salih Çelik, General Director of Animal Husbandry, stated that they aim to become a self-sufficient country in red meat by increasing productivity in animal production. “The red meat sector is not only a food production area, but also a critical sector that directly contributes to rural development, employment and economic growth,” said Çelik.

Highlighting that red meat production, which was 778 thousand tonnes in 2002, surged by 206 percent in 2023 and reached 2 million 384 thousand tonnes, Çelik noted, “Currently, our red meat sufficiency rate is 95.2 percent. Our goal is to ramp up this rate to 100 percent and become a completely self-sufficient country in red meat.”

STRICT SUPERVISION AGAINST SPECULATION…

Emphasising that speculative movements in the markets are closely monitored, Çelik added, “Price movements are monitored through the market monitoring system. When necessary, we intervene in co-operation with the relevant ministries.”

Underling that sustainability, quality and registered production will be taken as basis in production with the new support model, Çelik concluded, “We foresee that there will be no shortage in red meat supply with the slaughter of imported fattening animals by 2025.”
