The harvest of “Çeşme Melon”, which has been grown with heirloom (ancestral) seeds for centuries in Çeşme District, continues.

İzmir Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Mustafa Özen, also attended the harvest of Çeşme Melon, which has a unique aroma and can last for 5-6 months after harvesting, in Ovacık region of Çeşme district of İzmir province.

Provincial Director Özen also discussed with the producers and listened to the problems experienced in production and marketing. Talking about the projects that have been carried out in Çeşme in the past years and that will be realized in the coming years, Özen said that the district will come to the fore not only with its touristic value but also with its agricultural production potential.

Answering the questions of members of the press during the harvest, Özen said, “Çeşme Melon is a variety that is very well adapted to the region; This melon, which can be grown in arid and temperate conditions without irrigation, has been grown in these lands for centuries with its unique aroma.”

Pointing out that this variety, also known as “Hanger (Hook) Melon” because it lasts for up to 6 months, is produced in Çeşme every year on an area of 2300 decares, Özen added, “The yield is approximately 3,500 tonnes. We are planning to increase the cultivation area of this crop in the coming years, which has received geographical indication and made this land its home. As our Provincial Directorate and Ministry, we will continue to provide all kinds of support as long as our producers grow this valuable product here.”

Provincial Director Özen, who harvested melons with the producers, was accompanied by Mine Altın, the District Director of Agriculture and Forestry and Süleyman Özer, Chairperson of the Çeşme Chamber of Agriculture.
