The Malatya Commodity Exchange has partnered with the Fırat Development Agency to explore the ecology and flower biology of apricots in order to understand the potential effects of climate change on apricot production. The project, titled ‘Ecology of Malatya apricot and possible effects of climate change on apricot production’, aims to thoroughly analyze all aspects of apricot cultivation and investigate the impact of climate change on both yield and quality.

As part of the project, the apricot production areas will be extensively studied. Ramazan Özcan, Chairman of the Malatya Commodity Exchange, stated that factors such as elevation, aspect, topography, temperature, sunshine duration, and soil components will all be taken into consideration. “In addition, the project will also examine the effect of recent climatic abnormalities on apricot production, by analyzing meteorological data from past years.,” Özcan said.
The study will specifically focus on two of the major apricot varieties in Türkiye’s eastern Anatolian province of Malatya – Hacıhaliloğlu and Kabaşı. Tests and analyses will be conducted on the flower biology of these apricot varieties in orchards across several districts of Malatya, including Malatya Central, Battalgazi, Akçadağ, Darende, and Yazıhan. The project aims to disseminate the research findings through seminars, conferences, and ultimately publishing a book.

By undertaking this comprehensive study, the Malatya Commodity Exchange and Fırat Development Agency hope to gain a deeper understanding of the ecological factors affecting apricot production and to anticipate potential challenges that may arise due to climate change. This research will provide valuable insights for apricot producers and technical personnel, enabling them to better manage their apricot orchards in the face of changing climatic conditions.
