Geopolitical tensions affecting fertilizer trade are among factors overshadowing the farm sector – despite ample stocks and an otherwise robust outlook.
Outbound fertilizer shipments remain close to zero, despite efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, new WTO analysis shows.
Eighteen economies worldwide are particularly vulnerable to disruptions in nitrogenous fertilizer trade resulting from the conflict in the Persian Gulf, according to a data blog posted by the WTO Secretariat on 10 July.
These include African countries such as Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, alongside those in other regions such as Brazil, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
The analysis draws in part on data from the Strait of Hormuz Trade Tracker, developed jointly by AXSMarine and the WTO.
Urea prices fell in June, according to the monthly Market Monitor published by the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS), with future prospects dependent on further developments in the Strait of Hormuz.
The heads of four international agencies said that the conflict has had a “highly uneven” impact to date, in a statement released on 8 July by the International Energy Agency, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the WTO.
