The First Artificial Reefs Met the Sea in Aliağa Bay…
An important step was taken for the artificial reef project in Aliağa (district of Türkiye’s western province of Izmir) Bay, which was approved by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture and realised in cooperation with Aliağa Municipality and District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry. The first reefs of the project, which is planned to throw 600 reefs in total, met with the sea with the participation of İzmir Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mustafa Şahin, Aliağa Mayor Serkan Acar, District Governor Zekeriya Güney, Fisheries and Aquaculture Branch Manager Bülent Canatan District Director of Agriculture and Forestry Selim Aksakal along with Fisheries Cooperative Board Members and Chairmen.
The aim of the project carried out in Aliağa Bay is to support and diversify the marine life in the bay. Artificial reefs will contribute to the enrichment of the marine ecosystem by providing habitat and breeding places on the seabed. At the same time, it will contribute to the local economy and the livelihood of fishermen by supporting fishing activities.
Provincial Director Mustafa Şahin said the following about the project: “We have taken an important step to protect and reproduce natural marine life. Artificial reefs will contribute to the enrichment of marine biology and the sustainability of fishing activities.”
The artificial reef project sets an example not only for Aliağa Bay, but also for similar projects across the country in the field of environmental protection and sustainable fisheries.
