MESUT ERGIN: HAPPY WORLD OLIVE TREE DAY!

Press release…

Ayvalık Mayor Mesut Ergin celebrated ‘World Olive Tree Day’ for all those who earn their bread from this sector in Ayvalık (a district of Türkiye’s western province of Balıkesir) and across the country.

In order to protect the olive tree and to promote the values of peace, reason and harmony that it symbolises, UNESCO recognised 26 November every year as “World Olive Tree Day”.

Ayvalık Mayor Mesut Ergin said that olive trees have always existed and will always exist in these lands.

Pointing out that olives and olive oil are considered as national cultural products in Türkiye Ergin said. “Olive oils in the North Aegean Region have a different importance both at home and abroad. Ayvalık Olive Oil was the first and only olive oil to enter the top 20 among hundreds of products that applied to be registered by the European Union. The world’s highest quality and delicious olive oil is produced in this region.”

Ergin also reminded that trees have been living in Ayvalık for over a thousand years.

Emphasizing that this culture has been present in the Gulf Region for at least a thousand years, Ergin noted, “With our nearly two million olive trees, with what they have contributed to our culture of life from history to today, as a basic source of livelihood; olives have a special importance in Ayvalık.”

“Ayvalık means olive and olive oil. For this reason, World Olive Tree Day is very valuable for this region. Happy World Olive Tree Day,” Ergin added…
