“We endeared Turkish figs to the USA with TURQUALITY Project”

The TURQUALITY Project named ‘Turkish Tastes’, which is carried out by 6 food associations within the Aegean Exporters’ Associations (EIB) to boost the demand for Turkish food products in the United States, ramped up the demand for Turkish dried figs.

Stating that in the first half of 2019, when the TURQUALITY Project started, dried fig exports to the USA were at the level of 18.9 million dollars, Mehmet Ali Işık, Head of the Aegean Dried Fruit and Products Association, said that in the last 5-year period, Turkish dried fig exports to the USA achieved an spike rate of 98 percent and soared to 37.4 million dollars.

The share of the USA in our dried fig exports increased from 11 to 17.4 per cent…

Reminding that in 2019, Türkiye’s dried fig exports were 235 million dollars, Işık said, “Although we increased our exports by 15 percent in 2023 compared to 2019, we increased our dried fig exports to the USA by 47 percent. The contributions of our TURQUALITY Project are very valuable in this success. While the USA was our third largest export market in our dried fig exports 5 years ago, today it has become our leading export market by far. The USA, which had a share of 11 percent of our dried fig exports in the 2018/19 season, has become 17.4 percent of our dried fig exports this season.”

“Our dried figs were very popular in North America”

Pointing out that in the last 5 years in North America, Turkish dried figs have achieved great success in exports to Canada and Mexico, apart from the USA. In 2019, Işık added, “We exported 8.3 million dollars of dried figs to Canada, while our exports in 2023 reached 12 million dollars with a hike of 45 percent. Our dried fig exports to Mexico, which was 3.2 million dollars in 2019, rose by 25 percent to 4 million dollars at the end of 5 years. Dried fig exports from Türkiye to North America have grown by 43 percent in the last 5 years, from 44 million dollars to 63 million dollars.”
