“Intervention Board” proposal for red meat prices!

In the report of the National Red Meat Council (UKON), it is proposed that an “Intervention Board” should be established in order to stabilise the red meat market; “The current system is insufficient to meet the expectations of both feeders, users and consumers. It is of great importance that an Intervention Board to be established to regulate the market, which cannot be kept in balance, should intervene through stock exchanges and producer cooperatives when necessary. The effectiveness of institutions and producer organisations in price formations will make the red meat market more secure and sustainable.”

The National Red Meat Council (UKON), which makes suggestions to eliminate the lack of infrastructure in the red meat sector in order to contribute to the creation of a sustainable and strong sector, recently published the Evaluation Report on Slaughterhouses and Purchase Method.

The current system does not meet expectations…

“The issue is being evaluated within the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Putting these two issues into practice is not an easy task; it requires the employment of serious personnel, the use of technology and the establishment of a good control mechanism.
It should be well known that the infrastructure deficiencies in the production and sale of meat are not limited to these two issues. While breeders wish to be able to market their animals that have reached slaughter maturity at the most advantageous price, butchers, markets, hotels, restaurants and other red meat consumption establishments and final consumers wish to buy meat at a price that is suitable for their purchasing power or at a price that they can earn. However, the current system is insufficient to meet the expectations of both parties.”

The market cannot be kept in balance

“There is a structural problem that the market cannot be stabilised. Who or whom determines the price in the market and how? What are the factors affecting price formation? Does the system have a defence mechanism against manipulation and monopolisation? What can be done to overcome the deficiencies of the system?”

Slaughterhouses do not comply with hygiene standards…

“Another issue we would like to bring to the agenda is the problems encountered in the process from the purchase of raised animals to the production of red meat and its delivery to the final consumer. Even if the slaughter standard is implemented with determination, the most appropriate solution for the elimination of the desire of our breeders to closely monitor the slaughter is to determine the purchase price subject to trade on the basis of Live Weighing. In this way, after the weighing, the feeder will have no relationship with the buyer company other than collecting the money.”

An Intervention Board to be established will fill the gap…

“In addition to the purchase method, there is a great need for the Commodity Exchanges to be effective in determining the prices of livestock and carcass meat. The intervention of an Intervention Institution to be established in order to regulate the market through the stock exchanges and producer cooperatives in case of need is of great importance in filling the gap in the system.

We can clearly state that the only thing that not only the red meat sector but all sectors need is TRUST. We expect a strong will and determination from our competent authorities and cooperation and support from the stakeholders of our sector for the establishment of the trust needed.”
