According to a statement from the Turkish Exporters’ Council (TİM), the average export unit price per kilogram for the sector, which includes sunflower oil, pasta, wheat flour, chocolate and cocoa products, as well as biscuits, wafers and confectionery, surged by 6.5 percent to 1.1 percent.

Sunflower oil, which saw a 21.2 percent spike in exports compared to the same period last year, reaching 769.3 million dollars, became the sector’s most exported product. Exports of chocolate and cocoa-based products were recorded at 588.7 million dollars.

Iraq was the largest export market with 855.9 million dollars, followed by the USA with 538.5 million dollars.

In a statement including his assessment, Nihat Uysallı, Chairman of the Turkish Exporters Association (TİM) Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Sector Board, stated that global agricultural trade is going through a complex process where climatic anomalies, geopolitical tensions and logistical bottlenecks are simultaneously felt.

“The El Nino weather phenomenon and extreme heat in major producing countries such as the USA, France, Germany and Australia have lowered harvest expectations and that wheat prices exceeding 7 dollars per bushel have affected food markets,” Uysallı said.

Pointing out that disruptions in the Sea of Azov and port infrastructure along the Black Sea route have slowed shipment speeds, he explained, “Although prices in the Black Sea have theoretically decreased, wheat purchases from the region have decreased due to the high freight rates caused by the war risk premium in Baltic and Romanian ports. Under these conditions affecting global commodity flows, our food industry is proactively trying to manage operational and logistical risks in raw material lines, leveraging its flexible supply networks and high processing capacity.”

“One of the most important safeguards for the Turkish food industry in the face of price fluctuations and logistical uncertainties in world food markets is the wheat harvest, which has reached historical levels this season, exceeding 23 million tonnes,” he noted.

“Turkish Grain Board’s purchase guarantee, reaching 11 million tonnes, supports market stability and that the high domestic yield constitutes an important strategic reserve against supply shortages in international markets,” he added…
