Ömer Celal Umur, Chairperson of Aegean Tobacco Exporters’ Association, stated that there are big increases in input costs in all agricultural products in Türkiye.
“In recent years, we have had to export Turkish tobacco for 30 percent more on a dollar basis. This may lead to a prediction that if this hike will continue in the companies that use it abroad, we should reduce the use a little, so we need to be competitive, if we can remain competitive, I believe that I can maintain the current figures in oriental tobacco for the next few years,” he said.
“If we have to raise our prices on a dollar basis, we will lose our competitiveness after a point. Oriental tobacco will lose its place in cigarette blends to cheaper tobaccos,” he noted.
“We aim to produce 30 million kilos of Virginia tobacco and 6 million kilos of burley tobacco“
Pointing out that the rate of domestic tobacco use in tobacco products manufactured in Türkiye will reach 25 percent this year and 30 percent next year, he added, “We expect the production of large-leaf tobacco in the country to boost further for these reasons. We anticipate that Virginia type tobacco production, which reached 20 million kilograms in 2023, will increase to 30 million kilograms in 2024 and burley type tobacco production, which is 1 million kilograms, will surge to 2.5 million kilograms. Burley type tobacco production project is a newer project and we will see that our burley production will hike to 6 million kilograms in the coming years.”
