How is consumption of snacks and sweets affected by income level?

A new study shows that in areas where low-income consumers predominantly live, there is more targeted marketing of snacks and sweets, as well as higher prices for healthy foods and fewer healthy food options in supermarkets.

People living in low-income neighbourhoods and areas without local food stores consume more snacks and desserts than those living in high-income areas and neighbourhoods with many food stores, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Alabama-Birmingham examined overall snack and dessert consumption and four subcategories. These were flour desserts; candy and sweets; salty snacks and crackers; nutrition bars; and low-fat snacks and desserts.

The results of the study are remarkable!

Residents living in neighbourhoods with a large number of food stores consume 9 percent fewer snacks and sweets, 10 percent fewer sweet bakery products and 6 percent fewer confectionery and sweets overall than those living in neighbourhoods with no food stores nearby

People in areas with the highest incomes generally consume 11 percent fewer snacks and sweets, 19 percent fewer bakery products and 6 percent fewer savoury snacks and crackers. High-income households eat more nutrition bars and low-fat snacks than low-income households…
