In the next 25 years, the world is expected to face the serious issue of the climate crisis, which will have significant implications for the beer industry. With the world’s population projected to increase to 9.7 billion by 2050, there will be a greater demand for clean food and water. However, the adverse effects of the climate crisis, such as extreme weather events, will negatively impact the agricultural sector and make it difficult to meet the increased demand for food.

These challenges directly affect the beer sector, as its main raw materials, barley and hops, are agriculturally cultivated crops. Changes in climate conditions are anticipated to have a negative impact on the quality and production quantity of these key ingredients. For instance, studies suggest that barley production needs to surge by 54 percent to meet the global demand for malting barley by 2050. However, the climate crisis is expected to make this increase challenging. Similarly, hop production in Europe is forecasted to decline due to temperature changes and reduced rainfall, which would affect both the yield and aroma of hops.
The beer industry acknowledges these risks and is actively taking steps to address them. Adopting more environmentally friendly practices in areas such as water use, energy consumption, sustainable packaging, and waste management are being prioritized. Additionally, the industry is investing in new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis. Efforts are also underway to develop barley and hops species that can better adapt to climate change.
Like all other sectors, the beer industry will undergo significant transformation over the next 25 years. Producers are enhancing their focus on research and development to create more efficient and resilient varieties of barley and hops. They are also implementing measures to protect the environment and water resources during production processes and developing sustainable production and packaging techniques. As the climate crisis affects every sector, those that can establish efficient and sustainable processes will be better equipped to mitigate negative impacts. The beer industry is actively striving to fulfill its responsibilities in this regard…
