Acute Food Insecurity Has Worsened, Agencies Say…
New figures show that over 295 million people faced acute food insecurity and malnutrition in 2024 – with economic shocks, conflict, climate extremes, and forced displacement among the drivers.

The latest numbers show that acute hunger worsened for six years in a row, according to the Global Report on Food Crises, which was released on 16 May.
“Trade must become a driver of food security – not a barrier to it”, said UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in a foreword to the report.
“We need fair, transparent, and resilient trade systems that ensure food can move efficiently, especially during crises”, he wrote.
A separate report released at the end of April by the World Bank, UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Programme looks at the role of strategic grain reserves in addressing food insecurity.
Both publications come three years after WTO members agreed a declaration on food security as part of a package of measures that was adopted at their ministerial conference in 2022…
