A significant increase in barley production expected this year!

August 2026…

Barley production, which fell to 6 million tonnes last year due to drought, is forecast to rise by 50 percent to 9 million tonnes this year, partly due to favourable weather conditions.

ANKARA…

According to an analysis report prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, as reported by an Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent, barley holds strategic importance for the continuity of livestock production as it is one of the primary feed sources.

Barley, which is also used in the food industry as well as for animal feed, is estimated to have been produced globally at 154.2 million tonnes across an area of approximately 44.4 million hectares during the 2025–2026 season.

Last year in Türkiye, 6 million tonnes of barley were produced, a 25.9 percent decrease compared with the previous year due to the effects of the drought. During this period, both the area under barley cultivation and the average yield per decare declined.

When ranked by province, Konya topped the list last year with 3.1 million decare of barley under cultivation. Konya was followed by Ankara province, which had approximately 2.5 million decares of barley cultivation area.

According to crop production forecasts, barley production this year is projected to rise by 50 percent compared to last year, reaching 9 million tonnes.

This expected spike is largely due to the favourable climatic conditions observed during the 2025–2026 production season. In the regions where barley production was concentrated this season, there were no episodes of extreme heat, whilst rainfall was above both the normal level and that of the previous year.

Field observations also confirmed that the crops were developing healthily.

Based on these observations and the favourable climatic conditions, it is assessed that there is significant potential for a spike in barley production in 2026.

Given that feed use accounted for 85.9 percent of barley consumption in the country during the 2024–2025 period, supporting barley production makes a major contribution not only to safeguarding crop production but also to reducing the costs of roughage and concentrated feed on farms…
