Women who came together Türkiye’s Southeastern province of Hakkari within the Agricultural Development and Women’s Cooperative (DEMETER) in Yüksekova district harvested the first chickpea with their hands.
The chickpea harvest, which was planted by the members of the cooperative on 7 decares of land in the Mamerzan region of Kamışlı village, located about 17 kilometres away from the district, was held with the participation of District Governor Mustafa Akın and Yüksekova District Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mehmet Emin Yiğit. Picking chickpeas in 7 decares of land together with women, District Governor Akın said, “Our cooperative helps our citizens to put their agricultural products on the market with a special example of organisation. They fill an important gap in the marketing of chickpeas, honey, mulberry, grapes and other products. We thank them for this organisation.”
Derya Taşar, one of the members of the co-operative, stated that they are in this business as a family and said, “We used to produce only for our own needs, but with the co-operative, we are trying to do the work more comprehensively and more professionally. As a family, we are generally young people, university graduates and unassigned people. We somehow do not give up. We are trying to contribute to ourselves and the society in some way, whether through production or animal husbandry.”
