Ferhat Gürüz, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mediterranean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association, announced that Türkiye’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports in February reached 319.5 million dollars with a hike of 4 percent compared to the same period last year.
Stating that as the Association, they exported 166.9 million dollars with a spike of 21 percent in the second month of the year, said, “Our sector, which reached a value of 3.5 billion dollars with an increase of 18 percent in 2023, exported 686.3 million dollars with an increase of 9 percent in the first two months of the year. By the end of 2024, we aim to ramp up our exports by 15-20 per cent.”
“Tension in the Red Sea negatively affects our apple exports to India”
Referring to the issues on the agenda of the Turkish fresh fruit and vegetable sector, Ferhat Gürüz indicated that they were affected by the geopolitical developments in the global arena and that the problems in the supply chain due to the attacks of the Houthis in Yemen on commercial ships passing through the Red Sea were reflected in the sector; the tension in the Red Sea negatively affected apple exports to India.
“If quarantine protocols are completed, there are serious export opportunities in China and some Far East countries”
Pointing out that the Far East region is of great importance in the sector’s search for raising market diversity, Gürüz added, “The relevant ministries have intensified diplomatic traffic on the completion of the agricultural quarantine protocol for the start of citrus exports to China, the country with the world’s most populous population and that they hope for a positive outcome in the near future. If we complete the agricultural quarantine agreements in some Far East countries, especially China, I believe that there are export opportunities for us in these markets.”
