TURKIYE TO DRIFT INTO PERMANENT DROUGHT ON A LARGE SCALE!

While the increase in the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas, which cause climate change, causes an increase in global average temperatures, this situation brings extreme weather events, flood disasters and drought.

With the addition of the El Nino effect to the global warming factor this year, extreme weather events occurred in Türkiye as in the whole world.

The rise in temperatures above seasonal norms and the inability to reach sufficient rainfall hiked the current drought problem.

The highest decrease in the amount of precipitation in the Marmara Region…

In the Marmara Region, where the normal amount of precipitation for the water year was 670 millimetres, 505.8 millimetres of precipitation was recorded in 2023 with a 25 percent decrease compared to the normal. The region with the highest decrease in the amount of precipitation in the water year was the Marmara Region.

“Drought is like a cancer cell spreading to the body without showing symptoms”

Meteorological expert and Istanbul Aydın University Anadolu Vocational School Assistant Director Lecturer Dr. Güven Özdemir likened drought to a cancer cell that slowly progresses and spreads throughout the body without showing any symptoms.

Stating that the excess of methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide gases in the atmosphere, which cause the greenhouse effect, and the fossil fuels and oil derivatives used to meet the energy deficit arising from the rapid increase in the world population increase the temperature of the world, Özdemir also noted that the climate crisis emerged as a result of the precipitation patterns being affected by these changes.

Dr. Güven Özdemir

“We are a water-stressed country, but we are drifting towards water scarcity”

Sharing the information that 70 percent of the fresh water in Türkiye is used in agriculture, 20 percent in industry and the remaining 10 percent in individual needs, Özdemir advised to switch to modern irrigation systems by abandoning wild irrigation preferred in the agricultural sector, which is most affected by drought.
