“TRABZON MAINTAINS ITS LEADERSHIP IN HAZELNUT EXPORTS”

“Trabzon maintained its leadership in exports in this period”…

Ahmet Hamdi Gürdoğan, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Eastern Black Sea Exporters’ Association (DKİB), said that Trabzon province alone made 37 percent of the hazelnut exports from the country in the 7-month period of this year.

Noting that Trabzon, which is the centre of hazelnut export, continued its leadership in this period as well, Gürdoğan stated that in the hazelnut export carried out on a provincial basis, Istanbul ranks second, Giresun ranks third and Ordu province ranks fourth.

Expressing that the export season of 2020/2021 has come to an end and the new export season will start on September 1, Gürdoğan said, “We are much more hopeful for the new export season. We think that exports will be much better depending on the quality of the harvest.”

Pointing out that all the stakeholders of hazelnut, which is the common value of the Eastern Black Sea Region, should carry this value to a much higher level that all segments will be satisfied with, Gürdoğan drew attention to the importance of carrying out the studies in this direction in a common consensus.

Emphasizing that the temperature and drought will constantly increase in the coming years due to climate change, Gürdoğan added, “Hazelnut production in countries with less risky climate zones compared to our country is increasing every year. In our country, the producer’s failure to maintain and renew the gardens, also the failure to develop new varieties with high yields and drought resistance are the most important risks that will reduce our hazelnut production in the coming period.”
