SEBAHATTIN ARSLANTURK: ONE THIRD OF HAZELNUT EXPORTS MADE FROM TRABZON

Press release…

In the 2022/2023 hazelnut export season, which started on 1 September 2022 and ended on 31 August 2023, the amount of hazelnuts exported from Türkiye in the 2022/2023 hazelnut export season was 299 thousand 462 tonnes and 1 billion 798 million 876 thousand dollars of foreign currency inflow was provided in return.

Hazelnut exports in the 2022/23 season decreased by 12 percent in quantity and 9 percent in foreign currency inflow compared to the previous season. European countries, which are traditional export markets, had the largest share in hazelnut exports to 122 countries.

In the 2022/2023 hazelnut export season, Trabzon province alone accounted for 34 percent of the total amount of hazelnut exports; 101,858 tonnes of hazelnuts were exported from Trabzon and a foreign currency inflow of 615 million 648 thousand 471 dollars was provided in return. While there was an 11 percent fall in the amount of hazelnuts exported from Trabzon in the season, the export amount surged by 1 percent. While hazelnuts were exported to 60 different countries from Trabzon region, the most exported countries were Italy, Germany, Poland, France and Brazil respectively.

Sebahattin Arslantürk, Vice Chairman of the Hazelnut and Products Sector Committee of the Eastern Black Sea Exporters’ Association (DKİB), who made evaluations on the subject, stated that the high inflationary pressures experienced on a global scale, especially in European markets, led to demand contractions, and despite this, the export of nearly 300 thousand tonnes of hazelnuts was an important success of the exporters.

Arslantürk pointed out that demand contraction in buyer countries and buyer behaviours such as switching to lower priced substitute products rather than new purchases and not making stocks put pressure on prices, leading to a decrease in the amount of hazelnuts exported and causing export prices to remain below the previous season.

“I wish that the new export season of 2023/2024 would be a productive one,” he said.

“The markets exhibited a cautious stance under the inflationary pressures experienced in European countries and other developed country markets, which are our traditional hazelnut export markets and that buyers will continue to act very cautiously in hazelnut, as in all commodity prices,” he added.

“We expect a season in which action will be taken according to consumer movements in the markets instead of intensive purchases and orders will be formed according to market movements,” he concluded…
