Ahmet Güldal, General Manager of the Turkish Grain Board (TMO), said that the productivity in grains has enhanced with newly developed seeds and said, “In the 1990s, 250-300 kilograms per decare of wheat was said to be good yields, but now there is a production of 700-800 kilograms per decare of wheat.”
Güldal also said that seed production is very important for Türkiye and great progress has been made in this field.
Emphasising that Türkiye is a country that is more than self-sufficient in terms of seeds, Güldal stated that grain seeds are important for TMO.
Pointing out that progress has been made in grain seeds in the last 20 years in parallel with the developments in the sector, Güldal explained, “With the newly developed seeds, productivity in grains has increased a lot. In recent years, especially in periods of good climatic conditions, we have been getting very high yields. In the 1990s, 250-300 kilograms per decare in wheat was said to be good yields, but now we are talking about 700-800 kilograms per decare in wheat, and even more.”
Productivity also boosted in maize…
Drawing attention to the increase in productivity in maize, Güldal added, “It was called good when we got 400-600 kilograms of yield in maize, now production below 1 tonne per decare is not considered good. Production can reach 1500-1800 kilograms.”
