Hayrettin Uçak: Due to frost damages, we aim to maintain current export levels

Press release…

Uçak: ‘The quality of the products is suitable for export, that’s our only consolation.’

Hayrettin Uçak, Chair of the Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association, stated that the citrus crop in the Aegean Region is expected to decline by 34 percent in 2025 due to frost events in March and April. He emphasised that the only consolation is that the quality of the products is suitable for export.

Informing that Muğla province, the leading citrus producer in the Aegean Region, will experience a 57 percent drop in harvest in 2025, he said, “While İzmir’s citrus harvest decreased from 165,500 tonnes to 133,500 tonnes, Aydın’s citrus crop increased from 133,043 tonnes to 147,000 tonnes, making it the only province in the Aegean Region to ramp up its citrus crop. Balıkesir province, on the other hand, saw its crop decline from 21,182 tonnes to 12,000 tonnes.”

“Maintaining current export levels will be a success”

Pointing out that Türkiye exported 1 billion 46 million dollars worth of citrus products in 2024, he continued as follows: “Following the frost and cold weather in April, the Turkish Statistical Institute predicted that the country’s orange production would decrease by 12.4 percent to 1.41 million tonnes and lemon production would decrease by 21 percent to 1.368 million tonnes. Modest increases are expected in tangerine and grapefruit production. Under these conditions, maintaining export figures for 2024 will be a success for us.”
