Meatly is the first European company to be authorised to sell artificial meat (produced without the use of animals using laboratory-developed methods).
Meatly, a pet food company, has made history by becoming the first European company to be authorised to sell artificial meat for pet food in the UK. This regulatory approval means Meatly is also the first cultured meat (artificial meat) company to be approved for sale in any European country.
Meatly CEO Owen Ensor said:
“Today is an important milestone for the European cultured meat industry. I am extremely proud that Meatly is the first company to start selling cultured meat in Europe. We will demonstrate that there is a safe and low capitalised way to bring cultured meat to market quickly.”
The company, which produces pet food using artificial meat, has been working closely with the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).
At this stage, the relevant units of the UK government have checked and approved Meatly’s compliance with all necessary regulations through APHA’s inspection process. Meatly has confirmed that it will continue to comply with APHA’s ongoing inspections.
