Tuna farmed in Türkiye’s western province of Izmir, which is the most important centre of the country in tuna farming, is exported to many countries, especially Japan and makes a significant contribution to the national economy.
The caught tuna are transported to a total of 6 farms in Izmir after a journey of approximately 40-45 days and transferred to net cages to be fattened until they reach market size. The total annual production capacity of these farms is 6,340 tonnes.
Izmir Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mustafa Şahin participated in the process of transferring the tuna caught from international waters to cages for fattening and breeding in one of the 6 tuna farms located off the coast of Karaburun district of Izmir. Provincial Director Şahin was accompanied by Bülent Canatan, Fisheries and Aquaculture Branch Manager, B. Kürşad Sevim, Coordination and Agricultural Data Branch Manager and relevant technical staff.
This successful aquaculture and export process contributes to Izmir becoming an important actor in the world tuna market.
