Good results were obtained in the ‘Every Dem (Brew) for Soil’ project, which was started 5 years ago in Rize, a Black Sea region province. A 38 percent increase in yield has been achieved in areas with improved soil health. The application area of the project was also expanded in the new period.
The 3rd phase of the ‘Every Dem for Soil’ project, which aims to show the producers the right agricultural practices through exemplary orchards for sustainable tea farming and to disseminate these practices, has been initiated.
In the first two phases of the project, which has been carried out in Rize since 2016 in cooperation with the TEMA Foundation (The Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion and Reforestation) and Doğuş Çay (Private Turkish tea company), a 38 percent increase in yield has been achieved in areas where soil health was improved. Deniz Ataç, Chairman of the Board of Directors of TEMA Foundation, said, “About 86% of the soil in the region has become strongly or strongly acidic due to the use of intensive chemical fertilizers. This means that the soil is not suitable for tea farming. In this project, which we started in Rize in 2016 in cooperation with Doğuş Çay, we focused primarily on raising awareness about the acidification problem in tea soils in the first two phases and showing the producers in the region how to rehabilitate the soils with the right agricultural practices.”
THE ONLY TEA GROWING UNDER SNOW…
Doğuş Çay Board Member, Harika Karakan Batallı, added, “Tea has a very important place in the economy, agriculture and the lives of the people of this region. Turkey ranks first in tea consumption and fifth in production across the world. Turkish tea is the only tea grown in the field under snow. Taste. It has a significant advantage,”
