Bursa black fig’s export journey starts early…
Bursa black fig, which is accepted as the world’s highest quality fig with its long shelf life, large outer appearance and taste and which has entered the kitchen of the British Royal family, is targeted to export approximately 14 thousand tonnes this year.
The fruit, which has been registered with the geographical indication “Bursa black fig” by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, started to be harvested as of 6 August and exported after 8 August.
Bursa black figs, which are sent to Middle Eastern countries, Russia, Dubai and Hong Kong as well as Europe, are expected to yield 30 thousand tonnes this year.
Professor Dr. Senih Yazgan, Chair of the Uludağ Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association (UYMSİB), said that cutting and exports of Bursa black figs normally started in the third week of August, but this year these dates were pushed back by two weeks as the air temperatures were above seasonal norms.
Stating that the quality and yield of black figs are high but the fruit ripens early, Dr. Yazgan said, “Right now, the whole mass of Europe is either on holiday or at the Olympics. In other words, if you think that they will not consume figs in a place where they are not at home, the fig market is a little troubled as of this year.”
“As a matter of fact, demands are slow in that sense. Now the producer says ‘sell’ a fig that is ripe on the branch. It is not possible for the exporter to achieve this where there is no demand,” Dr. Yazgan added…
