DR. MURAT TÜRKEŞ: TURKEY IS TRANSITIONING TO TROPICAL CLIMATE

Stating that Turkey will be one of the countries most affected by climate change, Boğaziçi University Faculty Member Professor Dr. Murat Türkeş warned, “Turkey is transitioning from a subtropical climate to a tropical climate. A serious risk management is a must in every field.”

The climate change process and the measures to be taken were discussed at the meeting on Climate Change and Its Impacts on Agriculture held at İzmir Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry within the scope of the project implemented by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Turkey. Boğaziçi University Faculty Member Climatologist Prof. Dr. Murat Turkes also attended.

“We must take our measures against climate change without delay”

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, İzmir Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mustafa Özen reminded that the sector most affected by climate change is agriculture and said that measures should be taken without delay.

Addressing the producers about agricultural activities and water use, Özen said:

“Drought will be the most important problem of the coming years. Now we have to move away from traditional methods of irrigation. We are obliged to prefer modern systems instead of surface irrigation methods and to use our water correctly.”

“Our producers need to be sensitive”

“We need to move towards alternative agricultural products and techniques that are more drought resistant and require less irrigation. We, as the agricultural organization, will be by your side with the support of our Ministry and with the measures we will take for our local producers from İzmir. Even if institutions and organizations manage this process very well, our producers need to take care of this issue and approach it sensitively in order to be successful. This is a condition for us to be least affected by the negative effects of the climate change process,” Özen added…
