Atıf Malkoç, Head of Black Sea province of Samsun’s Fisheries Cooperatives Union stated that the anchovy fishing quota to be implemented as of this season will negatively affect the fishermen and citizens and said, “Anchovy will compete with gold.”
Pointing out that anchovy catch constitutes 65 percent of the fishing system in Türkiye. Malkoç explained, “Therefore, it is of great importance for the sector. However, day by day, both the rate is decreasing and the size is shrinking. This change also attracts the attention of the customer who goes to the counter. A quota was imposed by the ministry on the amount of catch in anchovy. Now only 400 thousand tonnes of anchovy can be fished in Turkish territorial waters. With the decision, it is aimed to prevent unregistered fishing and protect biodiversity.”
On the other hand, fishermen claim that the anchovies, which could not be fished in Turkish territorial waters due to the centimetre ban, have been fished in other countries for years and now the quota limit has put the anchovy fishing, which has been gaining momentum backwards, into even more difficulties…
