Bioeconomy…

The 17th Berlin Conference of Ministers of Agriculture was held this year with the theme ‘Shaping a Sustainable Bioeconomy’.

Agriculture ministers, deputy ministers, business people, scientists and representatives from non-governmental organisations from 77 countries attended the conference.

In the sessions of the conference, sustainable biomass production, sustainable utilisation of biomass, combating the worsening climate crisis, fostering innovation and ensuring fair framework conditions for a sustainable bio-economy were discussed.

Final declaration…

Following the 17th Berlin Conference of Agriculture Ministers, the most important political event of the Global Food and Agriculture Forum, a 34-point final declaration was published.

Raimund Jehle

The declaration, which expressed great concern about the increasing conflicts in the world that have an impact on food security and nutrition, emphasised the need for ‘reliable, sustained, adequate and unhindered access to food for civilians in conflict zones such as Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Palestine (especially Gaza), Yemen and Lebanon’.

The declaration underlined that a sustainable bioeconomy is key to transforming the world economy, together with a sustainable, resilient and inclusive circular economy, as a contribution to achieving sustainable consumption and production patterns that include renewable resources and respect the planet.

“We recognise that the high demand for biomass for food and non-food applications can lead to conflicts of interest, creating competition between different end-users for the use of natural resources such as land or water. We need to prevent and mediate these conflicts.”
