Veysel Memiş, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mediterranean Cereals, Pulses, Oil Seeds and Products Exporters’ Association (AHBİB), stated that pulses, which are the basic food product of countless civilisations in history, are a natural shield to reduce the effects of global climate change due to their high protein values as well as their contribution to the environment such as needing less water, less fertiliser, transferring nitrogen and potassium in the air to the soil.

On the occasion of 10 February World Pulses Day, Veysel Memiş said, “Pulses products meet 22 percent of vegetable proteins and 7 percent of carbohydrates in human nutrition, 38 percent of proteins and 5 percent of carbohydrates in animal nutrition. Pulses such as chickpeas, beans, lentils, peas and broad beans stand out as a vital food source for the food security of nations. Pulses products stand out as the food of the future due to their contribution to the environment.”
Veysel Memiş also noted that 10 February was declared as ‘World Pulses Day’ with the approval of 44 countries at the general assembly of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2016.
“Thanks to this special day, the contributions of pulse varieties to sustainable agriculture, nutritional security and the fight against climate change were brought to the forefront on a global scale, and that pulse products play an important role in the dissemination of climate-friendly agricultural policies,” he added…
