PAKDEMİRLİ: WE MUST WORK TOGETHER IN COMBATING FOOD WASTE AND LOSSES

Agriculture Minister Dr. Bekir Pakdemirli stated that thanks to the awareness created with the “Save Your Food” campaign, households have economised 100 million dollars.

Speaking at the session titled “Working together to achieve the zero hunger goal: Successful projects implemented by the Ministries of Agriculture” at the G20 Agriculture Ministers Meeting, Minister Pakdemirli underlined that the current production amount should be increased by 60 percent until 2050 to feed the world.

Minister Pakdemirli explained the outputs of the “Save Food” campaign...

Pakdemirli said, “We need to reduce the pressure on production, food loss and waste.” Pakdemirli also shared the details of the “Save Food” campaign, implemented by Turkey in cooperation with FAO, and said:

Dr. Bekir Pakdemirli

“With good communication and cooperation within the scope of the campaign, we have reached half of our population despite the pandemic. We have published guidelines for different food chain actors such as logistics, HoReCa and retail. We organized many workshops and events to promote the food banking mechanism. We have prepared animation movies and booklets for children. As a result of the cooperation with the Ministry of National Education, our campaign was included in the curriculum as a private lesson on EBA TV.”

“Save Your Food” will travel to 81 provinces!

The most important result is that consumers reduce waste!

Pakdemirli added, “We conduct surveys to measure the effects of our actions. One of the most important results is that 84 percent of consumers who are aware of the campaign begin to be more careful about their consumption habits and waste less.

Even this awareness alone corresponds to a saving of around 100 million dollars. Our campaign achieved successful results in a year. I believe that the satisfactory effects of the campaign will appear within three years. In the first year of the campaign, we focused mainly on food waste and we will also consider the food loss aspect of the business in the next period.”

Emphasizing the importance of cooperation on food, Minister Pakdemirli concluded, “We may have money, weapons, oil, but if we don’t have food, none of them makes sense. We talk about food, we invest in it and we explore new ways to transform it. But we cannot do this alone, we must work together.”
