Professor Dr. Yusuf Demir, Head of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Faculty of Agriculture, Agricultural Structures and Irrigation Department, said that in almost three quarters of Türkiye, snowfall was either insufficient or not at all.
“This has created a situation that seriously worries us both in terms of resources, ie underground and in terms of agricultural production and agricultural productivity in the coming period. Because the main source of groundwater supply is snowfall,” Dr. Demir said.
Dr. Demir told reporters on the occasion of 22 March World Water Day that the events organised with a different theme every year will be held this year with the slogan “Making use of water for peace”.
Stating that water resources in the world can contribute to global peace and security with fair and sustainable management, Dr. Demir explained, “In recent years, we see that both climate changes, natural disasters and changes in precipitation regime have been effective in the world and in our country. It has been revealed by experts that these effects will continue to increase in the coming years. We are experiencing a process in which 6 thousand people die from water and water-related crises every day in the world.”
“The number of people who do not have sufficient access to water is over 2.4 billion in the world. Over 1 billion people have to live with 2 litres of water per day. It is a fact that more than 40 per cent of the world will face a water crisis in the next 20-30 years,” Dr. Demir added…
