Ramazan Erkoyuncu, Chairman of the Union of Sugar Beet Growers’ Cooperatives (PANKOBİRLİK), announced that Türkiye is expected to produce approximately 21 million tonnes of sugar beets and around 2.8 million tonnes of sugar this year.

Erkoyuncu, who also serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Konya Sugar Beet Growers’ Cooperative, told an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter that both sugar beet production and sugar yield have been performing well this year.
Indicating that the “polar” values which indicate the sugar content in the beets were high last year and have remained at similar levels this year, Erkoyuncu stated, “Looking at the overall picture, we can say it has been a good year, a good season. We expect a production of approximately 21 million tonnes of sugar beets, which should yield about 2.8 million tonnes of sugar. Furthermore, with over 500,000 tonnes of sugar carried over from the previous year, there will once again be a surplus in terms of supply and demand.”
Pointing out that Türkiye’s annual sugar consumption is approximately 3 million tonnes, Erkoyuncu explained that even though production levels are close to consumption, the stocks carried over from previous campaigns have resulted in a supply surplus.

Underlining that under the Inward Processing Regime (IPR), implemented by Türkiye to boost exports and enable manufacturers to compete in global markets, exporters of sugar-containing products were previously entitled to import an equivalent amount of sugar duty-free, Erkoyuncu noted, “That has been abolished. We, the sugar producers, have committed to covering the entire volume that would have otherwise been imported from abroad. No sugar is entering Türkiye from outside; we are supplying it all ourselves.”
“Consequently, we are not spending any foreign currency on sugar. In fact, due to our sugar surplus, we may be in a position to export even more, not from our ‘C quota’ (surplus sugar), but from our ‘A quota’ (sugar intended for the domestic market), at export prices rather than domestic market prices. This might well be a first in history,” he concluded…
