Ömür Kula, General Manager of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Türkiye, stated that humanity, on a global scale, has depleted the natural resources available for 2025 in less than seven months and that after this date, we have been living by borrowing from nature.

“According to calculations by the Global Footprint Network, we have been continuously borrowing from the future since the 1970s. Türkiye reached this date earlier than the world average, on June 18th. This demonstrates that Türkiye, with a consumption record above the world average, must take faster and more decisive steps for the sustainability of natural resources,” she said.
Kula emphasized that the world hasn’t reached this point solely through individual choices and that decision-makers bear a significant responsibility in this regard.
Pointing out that in a country like Türkiye, directly affected by the climate crisis, they must view living in harmony with nature not merely as a choice, but as a necessity, she explained, “The ecological debt we find ourselves in today clearly demonstrates that there is no room for postponement. What is needed here is not just individual efforts, but a total mindset shift. From decision-makers to the business world, from individuals to local governments, we are all obligated to make choices that will reduce our debt to nature with every step we take, every legal regulation we enact and every decision we make.”
“Let us not forget that the steps taken to save the day are now manifesting as food, energy and climate crises in a much shorter term,” she added…
