Mehmet Ali Işık: Our target for food products to Japan is 1 billion dollars

The Turkish food sector, which brings the flavours grown in Anatolia—the world’s breadbasket—to every corner of the globe, once again demonstrated its strength in the international market at FOODEX JAPAN 2026 – the 51st International Food and Beverage Fair, the largest food fair in the Far East.

Mehmet Ali Işık, Chair of the Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters’ Association and Sustainability and Organic Products Coordinator at the Aegean Exporters’ Associations, who noted that Türkiye exported 337 million dollars’ worth of food products to Japan in 2025 despite the adverse effects of the global climate crisis, stated that their medium-term goal is to increase food exports to Japan to over 1 billion dollars and that they have taken a significant step towards this goal at the Foodex Fair.

Highlighting that Japan is a major importer of food products, with annual imports exceeding 70 billion dollars, Işık said, “Thirty per cent of Türkiye’s food exports to Japan originate from the Aegean Region. The promotional and marketing activities we carried out during the fair attracted significant interest. Our companies conducted 400 business-to-business (B2B) meetings. Pre-matching exercises were carried out with Japanese buyers. The Türkiye stand attracted a large number of visitors thanks to its eye-catching design and location.”

“Advertisements, digital promotions and collaborations with influencers were also carried out at the exhibition venue to increase Turkey’s visibility. The development of trade between the two countries and the acceleration of the ongoing Free Trade Agreement process are among the critical factors that will enhance the competitiveness of Turkish products,” he added…
