İbrahim Afyon: Surplus of egg supply should be utilised in exports and the food industry

Highlighting that egg production reached 1,902,299,000 units in January – the highest level in the last three years – YUM-BİR (Central Union of Turkish Egg Producers) Chairperson İbrahim Afyon stated, “Whilst the steady upward trend in production supports consumers’ access to affordable and high-quality protein sources for a short period, it threatens the sustainability of the production sector.”

According to Poultry Production data released by TÜİK (Turkish Statistical Institute), chicken egg production, which stood at 1,860,594,000 in December 2025, reached 1,902,299,000 in January. He added that the rise in production is an important indicator for both the sector and consumers.

Pointing out that the shifting global balances in recent times have once again underlined Türkiye’s strategic position in food production, he said, “Whilst many of our competitor countries are imposing export restrictions on various agricultural and food products, Türkiye is able to generate a surplus supply thanks to its production capacity.”

“Our self-sufficiency rate, which stood at 133 per cent in 2024 and 115 per cent in 2025, is expected to return to around 130 per cent in 2026. This means that once domestic consumption is met, we can easily restore our exports to their previous levels. Exports are one of the most important safeguards for food supply security and increased production,” he concluded…
