Professor Dr. Halim Orta, a faculty member in the Department of Biosystems Engineering, Land and Water Resources, at Namık Kemal University, Faculty of Agriculture, Tekirdağ, stated that the number of ponds (reservoirs) should be boosted to minimize the effects of drought.

Orta told an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter that the impact of drought on water resources is becoming increasingly evident.
Dr. Orta explained that precipitation has decreased by approximately 10 percent due to a two-degree Celsius rise in global temperatures due to climate change. He said, “Although this decrease may initially appear inconvenient, the decrease in precipitation is causing stream flows to drop by 40 to 70 percent.”
Dr. Orta highlighted that many streams and lakes have reached the brink of drying up due to the drought.
Pointing out that increasing the number of ponds that will collect surface water resources, he added, “We can hike water resources with dams and ponds. Their locations are very important. We do not recommend very large dams. Areas should be created that will not disrupt the ecosystem, damage natural beds or negatively impact the lives of living creatures.”
