İBRAHİM ALTINTAŞ: 440 THOUSAND TONS OF POTATOES EXPECTED THIS YEAR IN ÖDEMİŞ

According to TURKSTAT, Turkey Statistical Institute (TUIK) data, the price of potatoes rose by 31.02 percent last month. Prices in potatoes decreased especially with the start of the harvest period in İzmir and Adana, provinces where intensive production was made.

On the shelves, potatoes ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 liras in the field are offered to the consumer at 3 liras on some shelves.

The drop in the price of potatoes is expected to continue.

Potato harvest in Ödemiş district of İzmir province, meets the needs of about 10 percent across the country, continues under the measures of the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19).

In the potato dismantling that started at the end of last month and will last until mid-June, workers are recruited according to the rules set for the service vehicles they come to the field.

Workers disassembling with masks in the field also pay attention to the social distance.

In Ödemiş region, where the product is twice harvested on an area of ​​110 thousand decares annually, it is expected to produce approximately 180 thousand tons of potatoes in the first harvest.

“There is a production increase of up to 20 percent in potatoes”

Ödemiş District Agriculture and Forestry Director İbrahim Altıntaş, said that one of the two registered potatos in Turkey exists in the region.

Stating that they harvest two crops per year, Altıntaş explained:

“Ödemiş potatoes are very special with their smell, taste and colour. Our harvest has increased this year as well. While we expect a decrease in production due to Covid-19, on the contray we continue production at full speed today. We have a production increase of up to 20 percent in potatoes.”

Reminding that about 40 lorries are dispatched daily from Ödemiş to different reigons of Turkey, Altıntaş noted: “We expect the first harvest period dismantling of the year 180 thousand tons of potatoes.”

Mentioning that they foresee a production of 440 thousand tons per year, Altıntaş added, “We are on the side of both the producer and the consumer. We want the price to be balanced in potatoes. Today it is sold for about 2 liras. Prices will decrease a little more when entering the harvest at the same time with Adana.”
