The harvest has begun for the industrial plant hops known as ‘green gold’, which is grown exclusively in the Pazaryeri district of Bilecik province and is referred to as such by producers.

Used primarily in the drinks sector, as well as in the medical, food and cosmetics sectors, hops contributes to the national economy from Türkiye’s western province of Bilecik, whilst continuing to be one of the main sources of livelihood for the people of the Pazaryeri district. Whilst hops production officially began in Türkiye in 1955, the first efforts to cultivate the crop in Pazaryeri were undertaken in 1965. Once it became clear that Pazaryeri’s climatic conditions were suitable for hop production, cultivation was expanded across the district from 1973 onwards. Over the years, hops have become one of the key assets of agriculture in Pazaryeri. In particular, hops – which have become synonymous with Pazaryeri – rank among the district’s most important agricultural products. Every year, as the harvest season approaches, intensive work begins in the fields.
Visiting the hops fields during harvest time, Zekiye Tekin, Mayor of Pazaryeri, stated that the hops plant is a very valuable endemic species; it is used in almost every sector – in the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry.
“We have also developed a hops-based cologne in Pazaryeri. God willing, through our ongoing research and development work, we aim to expand its applications into different fields,’ she said…
