Hemp, which stands out with its wide range of usage areas and environmentally friendly features, is shown among the strategic raw materials of the future.

At the Hemp for a Sustainable Future Workshop organised by the Aegean Exporters’ Associations (EIB) and the Izmir Branch of the Chamber of Textile Engineers (TMO) at the EIB service building, it was emphasised that Türkiye can be an important actor in the global hemp market, which is expected to reach 100 billion dollars by 2050.
Çağlar Bağcı, Vice Chair of the Aegean Ready-to-Wear and Apparel Exporters’ Association, stated that although neglected for many years, hemp is not only an environmentally friendly product, but also a product with high potential in economic and strategic terms with its low water requirement, soil enrichment feature, recyclable structure and contribution to ecological balance.

“At the same time, hemp can be preferred not only in textiles, but also in many other sectors such as automotive, building materials, paper industry and composite products with its lightness, durability and fire-resistant structure. Hemp is a candidate to be one of the shining raw materials of the future thanks to its diversity of use and environmentalist properties. In this respect, it has the potential to be not only a product but also one of the building blocks of sustainable industrial policies,” Bağcı said.
“As the ready-to-wear and apparel industry, sustainability is no longer just a preference, but an inevitable necessity. Especially the European Union Green Deal regulations, which will enter into force in 2026, make it inevitable for our sector to turn to natural fibres. In this context, hemp will not only be an environmentally friendly alternative, but also a critical solution for our industry in the process of compliance with new regulations,” Bağcı added…
