HAYRETTİN UÇAK: WE HAVE A DECREASE IN CITRUS YIELD DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Due to climate change, the harvest of citrus crops in the Aegean Region decreased by 72 thousand tonnes in the 2021/22 season compared to the previous season and was estimated as 361 thousand 478 tons.

While the citrus yield in the Aegean Region was foreseen as 434 thousand 116 tonnes in the 2020/21 season, the citrus yield forecast for the 2019/20 season was 442 thousand 349 tonnes.

Aegean Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Exporters’ Association Chairperson Hayrettin Uçak said that while Turkey’s overall citrus exports were 755 million dollars in 2019, the demand surged during the pandemic period and exports rose by 23 percent and reached 933 million dollars.

Uçak also announced that Turkey ranks 7th in orange, 3rd in mandarin, 4th in lemon and 5th in grapefruit in the world rankings.

Uçak said, “Our country is one of the important actors in citrus production and exports. However, we feel the impact of global climate change much more now. This is not just citrus fruit, it is a situation that occurs in many crops. There is a delay in all products between 10-20 days this year. The temperature and precipitation normals of the seasons change.”

“We have exhausted the world resources to be used for 2021 as of July. Protecting the world is now more than an ethical settlement, it has become a matter of existence.” Uçak added…
