HAYRETTIN UCAK: WE AIM TO EXPORT 200 HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS OF GHERKIN

News release…

The target in gherkin exports is to reach 200 million dollars with residue-free production.

While Turkiye earned 310 million dollars of foreign exchange income from pickle exports in 2021, gherkins have become the star of pickle exports with 150 million dollars of exports. The sector aims to reach 200 million dollars in exports with pesticide-free production.

Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association, which realizes 80 percent of the country’s pickle exports, brought the gherkins industry together in İzmir’s Ödemiş district, the capital of Turkiye’s gherkin production, in order to ensure sustainability in production and export. Gherkin producers, brokers, pesticide dealers and exporters showed great interest in the meeting.

Speaking at the “Gherkins Sectoral Evaluation Meeting” held in Ödemiş, Bademli, Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association Chairperson Hayrettin Uçak emphasized that cucumber and gherkin are among the most important export products of the Aegean Region.

Underlining that the gherkin product is the apple of the eye of the processed product sector of the Aegean Region, due to both its export amount and the added value it provides, Uçak said, “Gherkins are more difficult to care for than other products and great attention should be paid to spraying and harvesting periods. As both producers and exporters, we need to be very careful about pesticide use. If we make pesticide-free production, we will be able to offer healthy products both in the domestic market and in export. I believe that we can easily reach 200 million dollars in exports.”
