At the ‘Sectors Speak at the Exchange Square’ meeting organised by the Istanbul Commodity Exchange (İSTİB), the war and food sectors were discussed.
According to a statement from İSTİB, the online meeting was attended by Dr. Ersin Dilber, Director General of Food and Control at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry; Mehmet Ali Kılıçkaya, Director General of Exports at the Ministry of Trade; Ahmet Bülent Kasap, Chairman of the İSTİB Assembly and Professor Dr. Kerem Alkin, a lecturer at Istanbul Topkapı University.
In the statement, Dr. Ersin Dilber, Director General of Food and Control at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, whose views were included in the meeting, noted that the necessary measures regarding agricultural production had been swiftly implemented from the very first days of the war.
Hihglighting that fertiliser stocks in the country are at sufficient levels and there are no supply issues, Dr. Ersin Dilber said, “We abolished the 6.5 per cent customs duty on urea raw material in the early days of the war. Furthermore, we authorised the use of ammonium nitrate fertiliser, the use of which in agricultural production had been banned for many years on security grounds. These steps were critical for the continuity of production.”
“At present, there is no risk in our country regarding either food safety or food security. However, should the war drag on, access to raw materials could become more critical. Our hope is that the tension will end soon and that supply chains will ease once again,” he added…
