“Lavender oil prices at international level varies between 70 and 120 euros.”
Director of Thrace Agricultural Research Institute (TTAE) Dr. Adnan Tülek said that lavender oil is an important raw material of cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry, Tülek also stating, “Lavender oil’s international price varies from 70 to 120 euros per litre.”
The lavenders were harvested in Edirne which completed their maturation in 20 decars of field. Enchanting with its scent and color, lavenders are brought to the distillation unit in the institute’s garden to remove the oil. The top of the distillation unit is fired under the top of the boiler to release the lavender oil and water.
After the temperature in the boiler reaches a certain degree, it leaves lavender, oil and water. Bottled lavender oils are analyzed for quality in the laboratory.
Tülek said that over the previous week attracted more than 50 thousand tourists in the fields of lavender oil began to be distilled. Particularly for barren and inefficient soils lavender production is accepted as an ‘alternative agriculture’. Tülek noted that they continuously informed farmers on this issue and carried out activities in order to raise awareness regarding the advantages of lavender farming.
Stressing that France and Bulgaria are also important actors in lavender agriculture, Tülek said that Thrace will take its share from this production in the years to come with its potential.
“Our goal is to demonstrate on 20 decars of field how to do this farming. Seedling, the establishment of lavender garden, how to do agriculture, how the oil is distilled, all these things are demonstrated to the farmers. As a result of this lavender planting attracts more attention day by day” he added.
